When we think about the Philippines, we often imagine paradise beaches, crystal-clear waters and endless palm trees.
And yes, all of that exists. But there are places that go far beyond the scenery, destinations that connect with you in a completely different way. And Siargao is one of them.
Known worldwide for surfing and its relaxed atmosphere, this small Filipino island has become one of those places capable of making anyone fall in love with it. But experiencing Siargao through a volunteer program is something completely different from simply visiting as a tourist for a few days.
Because when you spend time there, when you share everyday life with the local community and slowly discover the island, you realize that the true magic of Siargao lies in its rhythm, its people and everything it makes you feel.
And that is exactly why, during your free time in the volunteer program, you will have the opportunity to discover incredible places that will make this experience even more special.
Today we’ll tell you a little bit about them, but if you book your spot in the Philippines, you’ll also receive a PDF with all the excursions we organize around the area so you can choose the one that suits you best.

General Luna, the heart of Siargao
Most travelers begin by discovering General Luna, the most well-known area on the island and where much of the social life takes place.
Here you will find cafés among palm trees, small local restaurants, markets, surf shops and many charming spots where you simply feel like sitting down and enjoying the atmosphere.
The best thing about General Luna is that, although it is becoming increasingly popular, it still maintains that peaceful and authentic essence that defines Siargao.
After a day of volunteering, it is the perfect place to have dinner by the sea, watch the sunset or share conversations with other travelers and volunteers.
Cloud 9, much more than surfing
Talking about Siargao means talking about Cloud 9.
Although it is one of the most famous surf spots in the world, you do not need to surf to enjoy it. The wooden boardwalk over the ocean, the views and the atmosphere make it one of those places you always want to return to.
Watching the sunrise there is an incredible experience. The silence, the first waves of the day and the calmness of the ocean create a moment that is difficult to describe.
And if you decide to try surfing during your stay, Siargao is one of the best places to learn. There are schools for all levels and the atmosphere is usually very welcoming and fun.
Because many times, during an experience like this, you also discover new activities you never imagined yourself doing.
Island hopping: small paradises around Siargao
One of the must-do activities during your free time is island hopping.
Very close to Siargao there are spectacular small islands that look like they came straight out of a movie.
– Naked Island
A small stretch of white sand surrounded only by turquoise sea. There are no hotels, no buildings and no noise. Just sand, water and peace.
It is one of those places where you truly disconnect from everything.
– Daku Island
Much more local and authentic, perfect for spending the day, eating fresh fish and enjoying the Filipino atmosphere.
Here you realize that sometimes happiness does not require much.
– Guyam Island
Small, full of palm trees and with a completely tropical atmosphere. Perfect for relaxing, taking photos or simply enjoying the moment.
Because in Siargao you learn to appreciate the little things so much more.

Sugba Lagoon, one of the most impressive places on the island
If there is one place that amazes almost everyone, it is Sugba Lagoon.
Surrounded by mountains covered in vegetation and incredibly transparent waters, this lagoon has become one of the most spectacular places in Siargao.
You can go paddleboarding, swim or simply stay there admiring the scenery.
And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things about the Philippines: the constant feeling of seeing places that seem unreal.
Magpupungko Rock Pools
Another of the island’s most famous places is the Magpupungko Rock Pools.
When the tide goes down, these rock formations appear with crystal-clear natural pools where you can swim and spend hours enjoying the surroundings.
The contrast between the rocks, the ocean and the color of the water makes it a truly special place.
In addition, the journey there allows you to discover much quieter and more rural areas of Siargao.
Discovering local life
But many times, the best part of Siargao is not only the tourist attractions.
It is also about getting lost on small roads, discovering local villages, trying Filipino food in simple places or seeing what everyday life on the island is really like.
And that is exactly what changes when you do volunteer work.
You do not experience the destination only as a tourist. You start becoming part of it.
You meet local people, better understand the culture and discover a much more authentic side of the Philippines.
Siargao sunsets
There is something special about the sunsets on this island.
Maybe it is the calmness. Maybe the sound of the ocean. Or maybe simply the completely different rhythm of life there.
Many volunteers agree that some of their best memories do not happen during big activities, but during simple moments: watching the sun go down after an intense day, sharing conversations or feeling for the first time that they have truly disconnected from stress and rushing.
Because Siargao has that ability to slow you down.
And many times, that is exactly what we need.

Much more than a trip
A volunteer experience in the Philippines is not only about helping or collaborating on a project.
It is also about discovering a new culture, stepping out of your comfort zone, meeting incredible people and living experiences that you will probably remember forever.
And Siargao has the perfect combination of nature, adventure, tranquility and community to turn that journey into something truly special.
Because in the end, what makes a destination unique is not only its landscapes.
It is the emotions you take home with you.
And the Philippines is one of those destinations that photos don’t do justice to, because reality is even better.
