…for a Volunteering Experience
When winter arrives and the days start getting colder and shorter, travelling can be a great way to completely change your surroundings. But what if, in addition to escaping winter, you could use the trip to discover a different reality, support a local project and live a completely different experience?
The months of December, January and February are an especially interesting time to take part in many of our international volunteering programmes. While Europe is in the middle of winter, some destinations are enjoying their dry season, warm temperatures or particularly good conditions for exploring the country.
If you are thinking about travelling this winter, these are five of our favourite destinations to combine volunteering, culture, nature and adventure.
1. Uganda: for those looking for a complete experience
Uganda is one of the destinations that best represents everything an international volunteering experience can offer.
During the European winter months, the country goes through one of its driest periods of the year, especially between December and February, which also makes it a very interesting time to travel around and enjoy its natural areas.
But what makes Uganda special goes far beyond its landscapes.
Taking part in a volunteering project allows you to get closer to everyday life within local communities, discover a different reality from the inside and share daily experiences with local people and volunteers from different parts of the world.
During your free days, you can also discover some of the most impressive places in the country: Murchison Falls, the surroundings of Fort Portal, Kibale or the national parks that are home to some of Africa’s most iconic species.
Uganda is especially recommended if you are looking for a trip where volunteering, nature and adventure all have almost equal importance.
2. Diani Beach, Kenya: volunteering by the Indian Ocean
Diani Beach is one of the most interesting options for those who want to completely swap the European winter for warm days, beaches and an outdoor lifestyle.
Located on the Kenyan coast, Diani combines kilometres of beach along the Indian Ocean with a local reality that is often overlooked in the more tourist-focused image of the destination.
And that is exactly where volunteering comes in.
Taking part in the projects allows you to discover the daily life of local communities and support social, educational, healthcare or special needs initiatives.
Between December and March, Diani also experiences one of its warmest and driest periods, with good conditions for enjoying the coast and exploring the surrounding areas.
And if you have a few extra days, you can complete your trip with one of Kenya’s great highlights: a safari.
It is an ideal destination for those who want to combine a volunteering experience with nature, beaches and a few days of adventure.
3. Zanzibar: much more than beaches
Zanzibar is probably one of the destinations where you will forget most quickly that it is winter in Europe.
Palm trees, coastal villages, markets, small communities and the Indian Ocean are all part of everyday life on the island.
January and February are among Zanzibar’s dry months, with high temperatures and plenty of sunny days, making them especially interesting months to visit the island.
However, travelling as a volunteer allows you to discover a very different side of Zanzibar from the one you usually see in photographs.
Beyond its beaches and resorts, there are communities with their own dynamics, schools, social projects and local needs. Taking part in these projects allows you to get closer to the island’s culture from a much more personal perspective.
During your free time, you can also discover places such as Stone Town, Jambiani, Nungwi or some of the small islands and sandbanks surrounding Zanzibar.
And for those who want to extend the experience even further, it is possible to combine your stay with a few days on safari in mainland Tanzania.
4. Costa Rica: nature and volunteering during the dry season
Costa Rica is one of those destinations where almost everything happens outdoors.
Rainforest, beaches, wildlife, small coastal towns and extraordinary biodiversity make nature part of the journey from the very beginning.
In much of the country, especially along the Pacific coast, the months from December to April correspond to the dry season, making January and February some of the most popular months to travel.
At our destination in Sámara, you can enjoy an experience that combines volunteering with the relaxed lifestyle that characterises the Costa Rican coast.
Depending on the programme and the time of year, you may take part in community, educational or conservation and environmental projects.
Costa Rica is especially recommended for those who enjoy nature and want volunteering to be part of a trip that also leaves time to discover beaches, natural parks and some of Central America’s most well-known landscapes.
5. Senegal: an experience shaped by people
Not every destination is remembered because of its landscapes.
Senegal is one of those places where many of your best memories will probably have names, conversations and specific moments attached to them.
Taking part in a volunteering project allows you to get very close to the daily life of local communities and discover a culture where personal relationships, hospitality and shared life play an enormous role.
From our location in M’Bour, you can take part in different projects while discovering the everyday rhythm of a Senegalese coastal city.
And weekends offer the opportunity to continue exploring the country: Dakar, Gorée Island, Bandia Reserve or the Sine Saloum region are some of the possibilities.
It is an especially interesting option for those looking for a strong cultural experience and who want to step outside their usual environment without having to travel during the summer months.
Why volunteer during winter?
Although many people associate volunteering trips with the summer holidays, projects continue operating throughout the year.
Schools remain open, local organisations continue working and communities keep developing their projects regardless of the time of year in which we travel.
Travelling between December and February also allows you to experience destinations at a different time, meet a different type of traveller and, in many cases, enjoy particularly good weather conditions.
Uganda if you are looking for nature and adventure.
Diani Beach if you want to combine volunteering, beaches and safari.
Zanzibar if you are attracted by Swahili culture and the Indian Ocean.
Costa Rica if nature is your thing.
Senegal if you are mainly looking for cultural connection and community life.
There is no single perfect destination for a volunteering experience. There is the destination that best fits what you are looking for at that particular moment.
And perhaps this winter is a good opportunity to discover it.
