Volunteers on the community construction volunteer programs perform manual labour, working alongside qualified and non-qualified local workers to assist with construction tasks. Some tasks include renovating houses, building schools, expansion operations, building wells, laying motorways and other renovation works. Volunteers don’t require any prior experience, but qualified workers are very important. If you sign up to this program, you should expect to end the working day with your hands dirty.
It requires enthusiasm, a good sense of humour and a willingness to help your colleagues. The activities carried out by participants on these volunteer programs include construction, renovation, painting, the digging of water canals and the renovation of sports pitches.
Example of the construction volunteer program in Uganda:
Building kitchens and latrines for families affected by HIV in the Kyamkerege community. (Note: This is just one of the many villages in which we operate, and isn’t necessarily the one in which you will be based as a volunteer).
IMPORTANT: The construction program has an extra cost of €80 per week for materials. Volunteers should bring clothes that are suitable for working on construction tasks in addition to a pair of protective gloves.
