About FIJI

About Fiji

The Republic of Fiji is a country comprising a set of 333 islands. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, close to Australia. Fiji’s capital is Suva, but its most famous city is Nadi. Its largest and most populated islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. This archipelago previously formed part of the British Empire, gaining independence in 1970 after almost a century of colonial rule. Fiji is a highly attractive tourist attraction due to its islands, coastlines and crystal clear waters, comprising a unique tropical landscape. Its corals, marine species, diversity and the tones of its beaches come together to form an idlylic location. This is the perfect place for activity lovers and those seeking relaxation. Despite the fact that tourism and luxury come to mind when we are asked to think about Fiji, approximately 30% of the local population currently lives beneath the poverty line. These people largely live in the country’s rural areas.

Fiji’s climate

In Fiji, there is a dry season and a wet season. During the wet season, which lasts from November to April, the climate is hot and humid. Rainfalls are heavy and frequent. Temperatures can reach as high as 32 degrees. The dry season lasts from May to October. This is the best time to visit the island, when the visitor is better able to enjoy the islands and their beautiful beaches. It rarely rains and the temperature is mild, between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius.

VOLUNTEER programs

Where are the volunteer programs located?

Our volunteering programmes in Fiji are located in two cities: Suva and Sigatoka.

Suva, the capital city of the Republic of Fiji and the largest city in the archipelago, is located in south-east Viti Levu. The ethnic diversity of its population makes Suva one of the country’s most multi-cultural cities, and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Pacific Ocean. It has approximately 86,000 inhabitants.

Sigatoka is a coastal city located around three hours from Suva. It is located in Viti Levu, in the mouth of the River Sigatoka. It has approximately 9,500 inhabitants.

This is a popular tourist destination for adventure and sport lovers.

What to eat in Fiji?

Fijian cuisine is very similar to the gastronomy of other Pacific island territories. The main ingredients include coconut, fish, rice, cassava and taro leaves.

With the influx of tourists, the country’s modern-day gastronomy is heavily influenced by western cuisine.

One dish which encapsulates Fijian cuisine is ‘lovo’: a dish of meats, fish and vegetables which is wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in the ground.

How to get around in Fiji

The cheapest and most popular way of getting around the country is by bus. Taxis, which are relative cheap, are another popular form of transport.

Ferries and planes can be used to get from island to island.

Start/Duration

Volunteering programmes start every Monday and the schedule is from Monday to Friday. Schedules can vary depending on the local climate circumstances.

Tourist attractions in Fiji

Fiji’s main tourist attractions are its islands and beaches.

Whether you’re looking to relax and unwind on your holiday, or if you fancy playing sports and packing your schedule during your trip, Fiji is the perfect holiday destination for you.

Suva’s buildings assume a wide range of architectural styles, owing to the variety of cultures and religions that reside in the city. The capital’s beaches and corals are its biggest attraction, with it being hugely popular amongst divers and lovers of water sports.

Sigatoka’s biggest attraction is the Costa de Coral and its crystal clear waters; however, the city also has various museums, iconic architecture, parks, natural spaces, etc.

During your time in Fiji, you could also visit the city of Nadi, the Yasawa islands (which are of volcanic origin), the island of Taveuni (known as the Garden Island, given its landscape of beautiful flowers), Nananu-i-ra, the city of Levuka, etc.

Program goals

The objective of the project is to train young people to be social leaders. The volunteers live in a multicultural environment, work as a team to develop tasks or institutional projects, accompany the beneficiaries in their daily lives or through workshops, and collaborate with the needs of the centers and homes.

To achieve this, we work on three approaches

Social inclusion

Social Inclusion of children, young people and grandparents in situations of social risk.

Attention to Centers and Homes

Attention to Centers and Homes for the protection and restitution of rights of socially vulnerable children, adolescents and older adults.

Social action

Social Action The volunteers committed to the project will work alongside the community, involving different actors in society and allowing the full fulfillment of the rights of all people.

Our programs

Sports volunteering programme – Coral Coast, Sigakota – Fiji

Our own Sports Academy was created with these factors in mind, designed in a way that their passion for sports and enthusiasm for sharing their knowledge and energy could reach and spend meaningful time in the courtyard. Children from the nearby community come after school hours and are grouped into teams. So, along with a local coach, you can provide training to these budding athletes, give them exercises, and at the end of the session, enjoy a snack with them.

We hope that someday these young athletes will proudly represent their country on an international field.

Sport in a child’s life is of great importance for their physical development and will impact their future. We encourage you to be creative and propose different sports-related activities based on the age, preferences, and interests of the students.

Nursery volunteering programme- Coral Coast, Sigakota – Fiji

The class size in the kindergartens is large, making it challenging for the local staff to provide each child with the attention they need. Your job here is to lend a hand in caring for and attending to the children. It’s also the perfect opportunity to put into practice any skills or interests you have, whether it’s doing crafts or teaching games and songs to the children—your suggestions will be warmly welcomed. With initiative and enthusiasm, the possibilities are endless.

You can work towards achieving the goals set in the kindergarten’s plan, including conducting educational games and group activities, providing emotional support, and helping to improve the quality of life for those living in underprivileged communities. Some of the activities during the program could involve teaching basic English, planning activities for English comprehension, playing games with the children, organizing age-appropriate dynamic activities, developing students’ conversational skills, or assisting the children in engaging with the English language, etc.

Teaching volunteering programme – Coral Coast, Sigakota – Fiji

Your teaching work will allow students to interact with someone from another culture, and teachers will have the opportunity to learn different teaching methods and techniques. You will primarily assist the regular school teacher, so it is not necessary for you to have teaching experience.

Children in Fiji need two types of teachers, those with experience and those without; we have found that both can make a very significant and valuable contribution. Experienced teachers will find the freedom to be creative and design their own lesson plans, a refreshing change for some of our more mature participants who say it takes them back to the “good old days.” Those with less or no experience will receive the support and guidance they need from our Teaching Center, a relaxed environment that adapts to the way things are done in Fiji but incorporates updated teaching methods from experienced educators. You must love children and understand their behavior, as you will be surrounded by many of them every day, and their enthusiasm can sometimes be overwhelming, but they are children after all.

Construction and renovation volunteering programme- Coral Coast, Sigakota – Fiji

We have launched a construction project to support the local community by providing shelter to those in need and starting to rebuild some of what was lost during the cyclone disaster (April 2020). This project is based in the Sigatoka area and presents a fantastic opportunity to provide tangible benefits and aid to the local community in general, and schools in particular. Unleash your carpentry skills and participate alongside the local community in the construction project.

In addition to the core project, you can also get involved in gardening the surroundings, painting local schools, and renovating classrooms. Many of the schools we work with lack funding for classroom renovations or building libraries and resource centers, and this is where you can make a difference. Several years ago, we even built a library for a village school. In many areas of Fiji, thousands of families live in inadequate housing, and children attend school in dilapidated buildings. Our construction project allows them to move into new, better-quality homes and enables children to receive education in new and secure classrooms. You will work approximately 6 hours a day on the project.

Health education volunteering programme – Coral Coast, Sogakota – Fiji

The overall health of average Fijians is quite good, as most young people take an interest in sports and begin their training at an early age. However, as they age, especially women tend to experience obesity, particularly after giving birth. Since the majority of the local population lives in villages, they have limited to no knowledge about hygiene and nutrition. This results in a wide range of diseases such as hyperglycaemia, cholesterol, hypertension, etc. Other common ailments in the villages include skin rashes/injuries, urinary infections, gum diseases, and heart conditions.

Our health education initiative is in its early stages and requires the skills of both established medical and healthcare professionals and those interested in teaching basic first aid and personal hygiene. The need for participants at both ends of the medical spectrum arises due to the significant disparities in hygiene and health practices. Besides requiring qualified professionals to conduct health camps and dental check-ups, we also need participants who can educate people in areas of basic first aid and personal hygiene, such as handwashing, teeth brushing, and general cleanliness. This contributes to the prevention of many preventable health issues and easily transmissible diseases.

If you are interested in educating people in simple hygiene techniques, we invite you to join the Health Education project. Medical professionals who can provide guidance on project development are immensely valuable; however, having medical training is not a prerequisite for participants. As a participant in this project, you can support the implementation of healthcare campaigns in local schools/villages around Sigatoka, actively teaching the importance of basic hygiene, emphasizing proper teeth brushing, handwashing, and overall body cleanliness. Many of the daily routines we take for granted are not common practices with the children you will encounter, but starting simple education from the beginning can greatly aid in immediate and future healthcare. If you have medical knowledge, clinics for check-ups for children and adults in the area can be organized with your help.

UNIVERSITY PRACTICES

Our volunteers will be able to validate university credits with the aim of traveling in a more responsible and economical way.

What does volunteering focused on university practices involve?

At Cooperating Volunteers, we make agreements with different universities to validate university credits with the aim of traveling in a more responsible and economical way.

The specialties we work with are extensive: medical volunteering, nursing, education, social work, psychology, physiotherapy, engineering, architecture…

The practices can be carried out in our designated destinations for this purpose, as well as in Spain.

If you choose an international destination, it’s a unique way to live an unforgettable and enriching experience, as you will have the opportunity to continue your education in another country, with a completely different culture.

Stepping out of our comfort zone and being part of the various projects at the destination will allow us to grow both personally and professionally, creating a more extensive curriculum.

And we are fully convinced that this experience will accompany you throughout your life.

You will be able to visit hospitals, schools, centers, orphanages, and participate directly and actively in the daily lives of all those people at the destination, always accompanied by other professionals willing to collaborate hand in hand with you and guide you in daily tasks.

If your university is not part of the agreement with Cooperating Volunteers, you can contact cristina@cooperatingvolunteers.com so that we can get in touch and make this experience a reality.

FAMILY VOLUNTEERING

Quality time spent with family strengthens emotional bonds, promotes communication, and contributes to the emotional well-being of its members.

Spending quality time with family and being able to disconnect from our hectic routines is not only enriching but also necessary.

Sometimes we forget to communicate, connect, and dedicate time to each other. Each one of us lives focused on our jobs, schools… And it’s necessary to find the opportunity to pause and take care of ourselves.

Quality time spent with family strengthens emotional bonds, promotes communication, and contributes to the emotional well-being of its members. And of course, it creates lifelong positive memories.

At Cooperating Volunteers, we suggest moving away from those ‘more superficial’ trips (which can also be fantastic), but we invite you to live this experience to bring out our most empathetic and humanitarian side.

Family volunteering gives us the opportunity to be part of a positive impact, promoting values of solidarity and social responsibility.

There are many families who choose to experience these trips focused on cooperation and direct involvement with different communities around the world, where living conditions are very different and sometimes entirely precarious.

Projects are tailored to different ages, allowing us to work together.

An incredible way to fill our suitcase with memories, learning, and knowledge.

And although stepping out of our comfort zone often feels daunting, we assure you firsthand that it’s worth it.

At Cooperating Volunteers, we accompany you throughout the entire experience, from start to finish, to make it unforgettable.

SENIOR VOLUNTEERING

At Cooperating Volunteers, we believe it’s never too late for anything, especially for volunteering and living a unique and unforgettable experience.

There are many people, increasingly so, who opt for responsible travel that involves social work.

Accustomed to organized and mostly touristic trips, at Cooperating Volunteers, we want to advocate for a more enriching experience, one that transforms us from within and allows us to be part of the change the world needs to see.

We can adapt both the destination and the duration of our projects to fit your needs.

It’s an opportunity full of emotions that allows us to significantly contribute to different communities and their evolution. And you can participate in different areas such as education, social support, or assistance in different centers.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Sense of purpose: Provides a sense of purpose by contributing your skills and experiences to meaningful causes.
  • Emotional well-being: Reduces feelings of isolation and establishes social connections.
  • Personal development: It’s continuous learning, skill development, and discovering new activities while keeping the mind-body active.
  • Physical health: Keeping active.
  • Stress reduction: The act of helping others reduces stress and contributes to mental health.

Living this experience will undoubtedly be a before and after.

SOCIAL VOLUNTEERING

A volunteering initiative with leadership and impact through the educational action program.

When we talk about social volunteering, we refer to all those actions and activities carried out altruistically, selflessly, and with the aim of addressing multiple problems and needs of different communities, always focused on education and self-sufficiency.

Education is essential because it provides the tools and knowledge necessary for personal, social, and economic development.

Our goal is to create self-sufficient communities and provide opportunities for the future personal development of each member. The message is not to ‘give’, but to accompany in the process of training for self-managed provision.

At Cooperating Volunteers, many of our destinations and projects embrace this type of volunteering. Some of our projects include: community programs, education, women’s empowerment…

And although they are completely different from each other, they share a single objective: progress towards a society that can embrace us all in the same way.

If you are someone who is restless, who needs to see a change in the future, volunteering is an experience tailor-made for you.
