India, one of our star volunteer destinations, is a country of impressive cultural and geographic diversity and captivates us with its rich history and modern contrasts. From the majestic palaces of Rajasthan to the bustling markets of Mumbai, the country breathes a blend of tradition and progress.
With a population of more than a billion people, India is a mix of religions, languages and traditions that intertwine in a dance of colors and flavors.
One of the most popular festivals in the country that fills it with colors, is the Holi festival that is commemorated annually in the months of March and April. This year it is celebrated next Monday, March 25.
Preparation for Holi begins days before, with the purchase of colored powders called “gulal” and water. The streets and markets fill with people buying these bright pigments and water in guns and balloons for the celebration.
People set up their homes and gather with family and friends to share traditional foods and sweets.
Holi day begins early in the morning with religious rituals in temples and homes, where people offer prayers and sing chants to welcome spring. Then the real fun begins as crowds gather in the streets, parks and squares, armed with colored powder and water.
Traditional music and folk dances accompany the people throwing colored powder at each other. The atmosphere is full of laughter, joy and togetherness, as social distinctions are blurred and everyone joins in the celebration. Everyone’s faces, clothes and hair are dyed in color, creating a unique and fascinating visual spectacle.
Some of the delicacies enjoyed during Holi include specialties such as gujiya and thandai, a refreshing drink made with milk, nuts and spices. Children and adults alike participate in games and competitions, such as climbing butter-smeared poles to reach gifts hung at the top.
As the day progresses, the intensity of the celebration gradually diminishes, but the spirit of joy endures. Holi is not only a colorful holiday, but also a reminder of the importance of unity, happiness and renewal in our lives.
A totally unique and unforgettable experience if you volunteer during this time, and an experience to be had at least once in a lifetime.
