Silverback gorillas are an endangered species of gorilla located in the jungles of Central Africa.
Uganda is one of the main destinations to see them, which is why, when you embark on your volunteer experience, you’ll have the option to select a gorilla trekking activity from your panel.
Here are some interesting facts about these majestic animals.
1. SIZE
This species is the largest within the primate family. Males can weigh up to 200kg (about 440 lbs) and measure more than 1.8m (about 5’11”) when standing upright.
2. FAMILY BONDS
They have a deeply rooted concept of family unity; the youngest ones stay with their mothers for several years, and the bonds among members of the same group are very strong. They protect and take care of one another in the face of any adversity.
3. HERBIVOROUS DIET
Despite their incredible size, their diet is primarily plant-based, consisting of leaves, stems, fruits, and shoots, making it almost exclusively vegetarian.
4. COMMUNICATION
These animals use a variety of vocalizations, gestures, and facial expressions to communicate with each other. They use grunts, roars, and low-tone vocalizations.
5. SILVERBACK
They are known by this name because adult males develop a distinctive silver back as they age, caused by the growth of silver hair on their backs.
It’s a pity that such a wonderful species is now classified as endangered, and, unsurprisingly, human action is responsible for this. The decline has been steady.
The threats are multiple too: deforestation has led to habitat loss, illegal mining, agriculture, human expansion, poaching, and diseases transmitted by humans.
If you choose Uganda as your next destination for your volunteer experience, you will be able to enjoy them in Bwindi National Park. Our goal is to promote responsible tourism that not only offers a unique experience but also directly contributes to conservation efforts. This approach helps generate revenue for the protection of their habitats and supports local communities.
