The children at the nursery are aged between 4 and 5 years old. All of the children will be excited and exceptionally welcoming to the new participants. This is partially because of the natural and authentic friendliness of the local people, especially the local children. However, it is also because they’ve not had the chance to meet many westerners before. By helping the local staff, the participants will help to boost the confidence of the children. They will also help to improve their English, which will help them in a variety of ways in the future.
On the nursery volunteering project, just as in other centres, the children will want to play instead of being “taught”. Volunteers must therefore like children, as this will help them to understand their behaviour. This is required, as volunteers will be surrounded by children every day. Just by making them want to come to school and by teaching them some very basic phrases in English (such as simple greetings), you may well have sown the seeds of a lifelong learning habit.
This programme will not run during the school holidays (June, July, August and December) and other bank holidays. Alternative activities may include conservation and restoration tasks and working on a school camp.
Accommodation: You will stay in our volunteer houses in the town of Tukadmunga. The house is located just a 5-minute walk from the beach.
