About Mexico

About Mexico

Mexico is a Central American country lying between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, located right on the Tropic of Cancer. Mexico is bordered to the north by the United States and to the south-east by Belize and Guatemala. The capital city is Mexico City. The country has a total number of 119 million inhabitants, which is double the population of Spain. Spanish is spoken throughout the country, with the main religion being Catholicism.

Climate in Mexico

Mexico has an incredibly diverse climate. Due to its location and topography, Mexico features vast plains and towering mountain ranges. These variations result in differing temperatures across the country. You may encounter tropical climates in some regions, with temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius and high humidity levels. In contrast, there are elevated and cooler areas characterized by a mountainous climate, where temperatures can drop to around -20 degrees Celsius.

Gastronomy

Traditional Mexican cuisine has been declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Famous around the world, Mexican cuisine is primarily based on corn, beans and chilli, and is renowned for being particularly spicy.

Tacos, burritos and fajitas are some of the country’s finest exports, with these dishes commonly enjoyed in various countries. But Mexican food is much more than that. In Mexico, volunteers will be able to try cochinita pibil, tamales, mole and quesadillas.

For braver volunteers, Mexico also has a tradition of eating insects. If you walk around the streets, you will find various stalls selling these products. Ants and grasshoppers are just some of the insects that are commonly found in Mexican cuisine.

Transport in Mexico

The most common way to get around Mexico is by car or bus. Tourists can make use of the country’s huge range of regular bus lines to get from one part of the country to another. This is the easiest way to get around the country. Unlike in Spain, trains and planes aren’t a common way of getting around the country. No rail network exists that is suitable for public transport, and air travel is not very accessible when it comes to domestic flights.

Things to keep in mind

Tourist attractions in Mexico

Tourism is one of the country’s main sources of income. Whether you’re seeking culture or relaxation, Mexico has a range of popular tourist attractions for you. On one hand, Mexico is the cradle of civilisations such as the Aztecs, Mayans and Olmecs, amongst others. These pre-Columbian civilisations left legacies in Mexico that can still be appreciated today, through their various constructions.

On the other hand, Mexico has some idyllic locations that are highly sought-after by tourists looking to go on a relaxing beach holiday. Riviera Maya and Cancún are two of the most popular tourist destinations, with tourists flocking to relax on their extensive white sandy beaches.

Program goals

The project aims to train young individuals to become social leaders. Volunteers will live in a multicultural setting, collaborate as a team on tasks or institutional projects, support beneficiaries in their daily activities or through workshops, and assist with the needs of the centers and homes.

To achieve this, we use three key approaches:

Social inclusion

Social Inclusion of children, young people and grandparents in situations of social risk.

Attention to Centers and Homes

Attention to Centers and Homes for the protection and restitution of rights of socially vulnerable children, adolescents and older adults.

Social action

Project participants will work alongside community members, engaging with various social actors to ensure that the project benefits everyone and respects the rights of all individuals.

Our programs

Volunteer Program in the Jungle – Mexico

The volunteer program in the Maya Jungle is a project that promotes the adoption of better agricultural and forestry production practices. Its goal is to improve the health of ecosystems through reforestation programs and a monitoring program involving the reception, recovery, breeding, and release of wildlife.

During this volunteer program, you will engage in various activities:

  • Agroecological Vegetable and Fruit Production.
  • This program involves applying state-of-the-art organic agricultural production techniques. You’ll learn about how a biofactory operates and take part in the production of biofertilizers prepared with microorganisms like fungi, bacteria, and algae.
  • Wildlife Monitoring.
  • Through biological monitoring in this program, you’ll understand the dynamics of ecosystems under human intervention. It’s an essential tool to ensure the conservation, management, and sustainable use of biodiversity across its various integration levels. Throughout your stay, you’ll navigate trails for observation walks, collect data from camera traps, and process this information.
  • Bioconstruction
  • Conventional construction, in most of its forms, has veered off track in the last two centuries. The pursuit of solutions and highly resistant materials aimed solely at enhancing the quality of life for inhabitants now faces different crises, notably its high environmental impact characterized by excessive resource consumption and environmental pollution.

During your stay with us, you’ll learn a method of construction respectful of living beings and the environment. The aim is to achieve the integration of UVISEA spaces with their surroundings while minimizing the impact.

Volunteer Program on the Caribbean Coast – Mexico

The volunteer program developed by Aborigen on the coast, in coordination with the Secretary of Sustainable Development of the Yucatán government (SDS), is a project that promotes the ecology and regeneration of marine ecosystems through three fundamental programs that support the model for regenerating the Yucatán coastal region.

During this volunteer program you will engage in the following activities:

    • Turtle Program
    • You will work at a marine environmental protection station.

Important: From June to September (inclusive), you can participate in turtle volunteering. During the rest of the year, there are a variety of activities to be carried out.

  • Beach Cleaning
  • Monitoring of Marine Life
  • Monitoring and cleaning of mangrove wetlands: Mangrove ecosystems are among those most at risk of degradation and disappearance worldwide.

Volunteer Program in Environmental Management Unit

An Environmental Management Unit (EMU) is much more than just a space dedicated to conservation. It is a sanctuary where nature regains its balance, and native species find refuge to thrive. Our EMU stands out for its comprehensive approach, integrating scientific research with sustainable practices to ensure the long-term health of our environment.

Why volunteering at EMU?

  • Direct Impact: Every hour you dedicate and every effort you make will have a tangible impact on biodiversity preservation and the restoration of natural habitats.
  • Environmental Education: You will learn from conservation experts about the importance of biological diversity, the interconnectedness of ecosystems, and how our daily actions affect the environment.
  • Environmental Community: You will become part of a passionate and committed community, sharing experiences with people who share your love for nature.
  • Hands-On Experience: You will gain practical skills in environmental management, from planting native species to monitoring local wildlife.

What will I do during my program?

  • Maintenance and improvement of facilities.
  • Collaborative surveillance for a protected environment.
  • Development of skills in rural environments.
  • Monitoring and surveillance of fauna.
  • Support in daily activities of the EMU.
  • Assistance in research projects.
  • Schedule: Work will be carried out from
  • Monday to Friday, with five-hour workdays.

UNIVERSITY PRACTICES

Our volunteers will be able to validate university credits with the aim of traveling in a more responsible and economical way.

What does volunteering focused on university practices involve?

At Cooperating Volunteers, we make agreements with different universities to validate university credits with the aim of traveling in a more responsible and economical way.

The specialties we work with are extensive: medical volunteering, nursing, education, social work, psychology, physiotherapy, engineering, architecture…

The practices can be carried out in our designated destinations for this purpose, as well as in Spain.

If you choose an international destination, it’s a unique way to live an unforgettable and enriching experience, as you will have the opportunity to continue your education in another country, with a completely different culture.

Stepping out of our comfort zone and being part of the various projects at the destination will allow us to grow both personally and professionally, creating a more extensive curriculum.

And we are fully convinced that this experience will accompany you throughout your life.

You will be able to visit hospitals, schools, centers, orphanages, and participate directly and actively in the daily lives of all those people at the destination, always accompanied by other professionals willing to collaborate hand in hand with you and guide you in daily tasks.

If your university is not part of the agreement with Cooperating Volunteers, you can contact cristina@cooperatingvolunteers.com so that we can get in touch and make this experience a reality.

FAMILY VOLUNTEERING

Quality time spent with family strengthens emotional bonds, promotes communication, and contributes to the emotional well-being of its members.

Spending quality time with family and being able to disconnect from our hectic routines is not only enriching but also necessary.

Sometimes we forget to communicate, connect, and dedicate time to each other. Each one of us lives focused on our jobs, schools… And it’s necessary to find the opportunity to pause and take care of ourselves.

Quality time spent with family strengthens emotional bonds, promotes communication, and contributes to the emotional well-being of its members. And of course, it creates lifelong positive memories.

At Cooperating Volunteers, we suggest moving away from those ‘more superficial’ trips (which can also be fantastic), but we invite you to live this experience to bring out our most empathetic and humanitarian side.

Family volunteering gives us the opportunity to be part of a positive impact, promoting values of solidarity and social responsibility.

There are many families who choose to experience these trips focused on cooperation and direct involvement with different communities around the world, where living conditions are very different and sometimes entirely precarious.

Projects are tailored to different ages, allowing us to work together.

An incredible way to fill our suitcase with memories, learning, and knowledge.

And although stepping out of our comfort zone often feels daunting, we assure you firsthand that it’s worth it.

At Cooperating Volunteers, we accompany you throughout the entire experience, from start to finish, to make it unforgettable.

SENIOR VOLUNTEERING

At Cooperating Volunteers, we believe it’s never too late for anything, especially for volunteering and living a unique and unforgettable experience.

There are many people, increasingly so, who opt for responsible travel that involves social work.

Accustomed to organized and mostly touristic trips, at Cooperating Volunteers, we want to advocate for a more enriching experience, one that transforms us from within and allows us to be part of the change the world needs to see.

We can adapt both the destination and the duration of our projects to fit your needs.

It’s an opportunity full of emotions that allows us to significantly contribute to different communities and their evolution. And you can participate in different areas such as education, social support, or assistance in different centers.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Sense of purpose: Provides a sense of purpose by contributing your skills and experiences to meaningful causes.
  • Emotional well-being: Reduces feelings of isolation and establishes social connections.
  • Personal development: It’s continuous learning, skill development, and discovering new activities while keeping the mind-body active.
  • Physical health: Keeping active.
  • Stress reduction: The act of helping others reduces stress and contributes to mental health.

Living this experience will undoubtedly be a before and after.

SOCIAL VOLUNTEERING

A volunteering initiative with leadership and impact through the educational action program.

When we talk about social volunteering, we refer to all those actions and activities carried out altruistically, selflessly, and with the aim of addressing multiple problems and needs of different communities, always focused on education and self-sufficiency.

Education is essential because it provides the tools and knowledge necessary for personal, social, and economic development.

Our goal is to create self-sufficient communities and provide opportunities for the future personal development of each member. The message is not to ‘give’, but to accompany in the process of training for self-managed provision.

At Cooperating Volunteers, many of our destinations and projects embrace this type of volunteering. Some of our projects include: community programs, education, women’s empowerment…

And although they are completely different from each other, they share a single objective: progress towards a society that can embrace us all in the same way.

If you are someone who is restless, who needs to see a change in the future, volunteering is an experience tailor-made for you.
